UNIT Assignment Unit 9 After reading the article “Quality Improvement in Public Health: Lesson Learned from the Multi-State Learning Collaborative” (n.d.), retrieved from the Academy Health website, I feel more knowledgeable about the processes and progress of Quality Improvement in Public Health. According to this article the three major initiatives for Quality Improvement in Public Health are Public Health Quality Forum (PHQF), Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) and Multi-State Learning Collaborative (MLC). (Academy Health, n.d.). This paper will go through the major concepts within the article, it will show the positive outcomes from the two case studies and it will comment on the stated next steps. This article explains that the Public Health Quality Forum was created in 2008 by the Department of Health and Human Services. The objective of the standard was to guide and standardize QI core set and indicators of Public Health practices. This was to meet the needs of the community. Define accreditation Accreditation is a process that a health care institution, provider, or program undergoes to demonstrate compliance with standards developed by an official agency (Accreditation, n.d). Accreditation for institutions and agencies in the United States and Canada is voluntary. This means not only people but other organizations can be accredited such as hospitals, schools, and programs. We will be looking through accreditation in terms of healthcare. In healthcare there are many different accreditations which represent organizations as having a higher standard. Accreditation is a process of review that healthcare organizations participate in to demonstrate the ability to meet predetermined criteria and standards of accreditation established by a professional accrediting agency ("What is Accreditation I ACHC Accreditation," n.d.). This is important because if organizations do not have accreditations then they will not be able to do certain things. Accreditation is regarded as one of the key benchmarks for measuring the quality of an organization ("Why get Accredited," n.d.). Preparing for accreditation gives the organization an opportunity to identify its strengths and opportunities for improvement ("Why get Accredited," n.d.). This process provides information for management to make decisions regarding operations in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of business performance ("Why get Accredited," n.d.). Just as certifications, accreditations need to be renewed about every 3 years or so. Depending on what is being done at the facility then you may need to get multiple accreditations. The patients benefit the most from a facility to be accredited because they know that there is a level of service that they can expect for themselves as well as their love ones. According to achc.org it says with all of the changes in health care, accreditations are valuable to an organization, patients can rest assure that they will be taken care of.
